Ardenis - Lake Arpi Trail

Geographically, it is situated in the very north-west of Armenia occupying the Ashotsk (Javakhq) Plateau. The trail spans elevations of 2030 – 2105 m above sea level and includes Lake Arpi - the only largest water body (2200 ha) in the Plateau, part of which has been recently designated as Lake Arpi National Park.

Length: 55-60 cm, Wing Span: 131-143 cm

General description: Dark eyes, yellow legs, and black subterminal bar on bill tip. During the breeding season shows an obvious red spot near the tip of lower mandible. Boasts long sharp wings meant for lengthy journeys. In flight, shows extensive black area on outerwing with one white patch on outermost primary. The legs are relatively short with complete or partial webs. Good swimmer and diver with thick “waterproof” feathers, usually colored white, grey and black.

Abundance and habitat:  Common species, Year-round resident.

The colonies breeding in the basins of Lakes Sevan and Arpi boast the largest in the entire Caucasus region. Also occurs in open water areas, along riverbeds.

Food: Wide variety of animals and plants. Often encountered in landfills in search of food.

Status: Species with vulnerable nesting grounds. Listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Armenia, categorized as vulnerable, protected by the RA law on fauna.

    How to reach From Gyumri go north on the M1 highway toward Georgia for 41km. Just pass the village Ghazanchi, turn to the west toward the village Ardenis. Drive west through the village Ardenis for 15km to reach Arpi lake.
