General description: Black overall with yellow legs. White frontal shield and short sharp bill, red eyes.
Abundance and habitat: Common species of resident birds. Occurs in lakes, marshes and slow-flowing rivers. Builds a platform nest of reeds.
Food: Aquatic vegetation, worms, insects.
Status: Protected by the RA law on fauna.
