Garni - General Historical Sketch
Garni is one of the oldest settlements in Armenia. The fortress of Garni is situated 28 km of Yerevan, at the foot of the Geghama Mountains, on the right bank of the Azat River, on a picturesque, triangular terrace.
The name of the fortress originated from the name of the country (race) Giarniani, existing in this territory in the 8th c. BCE. Excavations, conducted inside the fortress, show that it was inhabited from the last quarter of the 4th millennium BCE up to the late Middle Ages.
The settlement, weakened as a result of continuous raids by invaders in the 13th-17th cc., was completely destroyed during the earthquake of 1679.
Not until a century and a half later, in the 1830s and after the Russian-Persian and the Russian-Turkish wars was it inhabited again by Armenians migrating from the Persian town of Maku who took refuge here building on top of Garni's abandoned and ruined field.
The monument includes the wall of the fortress, the Temple of God Mihr, the palace, secular constructions, the royal bath-house, a Vishap (dragon) stone, the foundations of a 7th c. church and other historical-cultural constructions.
Today the town of Garni is a large, wealthy settlement. It covers an area of 5875 hectares and has about 8000 inhabitants.
