Meghri Fortress

MEGHRI FORTRESS

Meghri Fortress is truly impressive. It is first mentioned by historian Stepanos Orbelian, who described it as a famous and impregnable structure in 1083. The fortress boasts 6 towers made of rough granite:  4 circular and 2 rectangular.

Unlike other fortresses in Armenia, Meghri Fortress lacks outer walls, the impregnable mountain slopes serving as natural defenses. The structure is also unique for being designed for artillery, which makes it an architectural achievement of the time.

The fortress is the site of a desperate 5-day holdout in 1723 by David Bek and 400 partisans against a Turkish army of tens of thousands until the main forces reached Meghri.
