Ulgyur
Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Virgin) church-chapel (11th-14th cc.) is located to the west of Ulgyur settlement, in Nerkin Ulgyur, about 5 km north-west of Aghavnadzor village.
It is a small building with a rectangular plan, renovated during the Soviet period. On the southern side of the monument stand two dragon-sculptures, both converted into khachkars (cross stones) in 1001 and in the 11th-12th centuries. Later, in 1199, one of the dragon sculptures was enriched with a carving and an inscription.
The tombstones of the famous medieval architect Momik's parents, Grigor and Avta, Momik's brother Gohartur and his wife Kherik, and their children Khlat and Khaz were found in the church cemetery.
The inscriptions uncovered in Verin and Nerkin Ulgyur archeological sites in 1995 and 2004 made it possible to create Momik's family tree. Only the structural walls of Verin Ulgyur's St. Stepanos church (13th c.) survive.
