Background

Historians mention the monastery in the year 1000, when S. Stepanos church was built for Queen Shahandukht.  In 1006 her son, Sevada, commissioned S. Karapet (“the forerunner”, i.e. John the Baptist) to the SW of the older church.

The monastery was ruined by Seljuks in 1104 and rebuilt during the 14th c; there are inscriptions on the walls attributed to the famous theologian, philosopher and founder of Tatev University, Hovhannes Vorotnetsi (1315-1398).  The monastery was sacked during Timurid invasions and the 1931 earthquake completely ruined the complex, toppling the dome and walls.  Modern renovation began in the 1980s.
